Insulation Bricks For Arched Walls in Industrial Kilns: Structure, Application, and Masonry Techniques
In high-temperature industrial applications, arched walls—whether circular or curved—are essential structural components in various types of kilns and furnaces, such as blast furnaces, hot blast stoves, cupolas, mixing furnaces, converters, and rotary kilns. These walls require specialized refractory bricks and precise masonry methods to ensure durability, safety, and energy efficiency under extreme conditions.
Understanding the Arched Wall Design
Arched kiln walls are characterized by their unique geometry. They consist of radial joints (vertical seams) and ring joints (horizontal seams). Due to the structural shape, these walls are typically built using wedge-shaped bricks or customized special-shaped bricks, which conform to the arc of the steel furnace shell.
To ensure precision during masonry, a central guide pipe and radius gauge are installed at the center of the furnace. These tools help control the internal space dimensions and vertical alignment of the wall. If the steel shell’s vertical deviation is within tolerance, it can serve as a reference surface for bricklaying. In cases where the shell is coated with an accurate spraying layer, the layer itself can act as a baseline for the masonry work.
High-Quality Insulation Bricks For Arched Kiln Walls
The construction of arched walls demands insulation bricks with excellent thermal resistance, precise dimensions, and high structural strength. Our insulation bricks are specially designed for curved and circular applications in high-temperature furnaces. These refractory bricks not only withstand heat and chemical attack but also help reduce overall energy consumption by minimizing heat loss.
Key features of our insulation bricks:
Low thermal conductivity, reducing energy waste
High mechanical strength, ensuring long-term stability
Excellent dimensional accuracy, ideal for complex curved structures
Lightweight and easy to install, lowering labor and construction time
Whether for permanent linings or backup insulation layers, our bricks provide reliable performance in even the most challenging industrial settings.
Precision Bricklaying Process for Optimal Results
Before bricklaying begins, the foundation must be leveled according to design requirements. If the wall is built on a flat furnace bottom, it’s known as a “dead bottom”; if built on a furnace foundation and aligned with the bottom’s vertical joints, it’s a “live bottom.”
The bricklaying process typically starts from the furnace centerline and proceeds symmetrically outward. Each layer must be laid with staggered joints to enhance structural integrity. The top layer of the furnace bottom and flue channel is usually laid horizontally or vertically, ensuring large brick faces are perpendicular to the flow of molten metal, slag, or hot gas.
In cases where the furnace uses a reverse arch bottom, the bricks are built upon a curved base layer made of ramming mix, castable, or brickwork. A curved template is used to guide the arc. The arch is constructed symmetrically from the centerline, with the arch feet carefully embedded into the side walls. Contact surfaces between the arch and the end walls are finely finished to prevent gaps or thermal leakage.
All joints must be tightly sealed, and mortar fully filled to avoid heat loss and structural failure during operation.
Arched Furnace Roof Construction
Furnace roofs may also feature various curved forms, including arched roofs, ring-shaped roofs, suspended roofs, and spherical domes. Each design requires specific refractory brick types and precise installation to ensure the roof’s integrity and longevity under high thermal stress.
